The internship year at the San Francisco Orthopaedic Residency Program (SFORP) consists of a comprehensive introduction to medicine and surgery. It incorporates a wide variety of specialties and disciplines that allows you to build a solid foundation of both academic and practical medical knowledge. Each rotation is one month long and the year is divided into two halves.
The first half of PGY-1 training starts on July 1st and takes place at both St. Mary’s Medical Center and St. Francis Hospital. The six one-month rotations include:
The second half of PGY-1 training starts on January 1st and takes place at both Alameda County Highland Hospital and the Children’s Hospital & Research Center in Oakland. The six one month rotations include:
During the entire year, you use a total seven months of Q3/Q4 in-house call with shift work being prevalent for the other services. You are provided three weeks of vacation to be taken one week at a time with pre-approval from the program director.
During the first year, rotations will also take place at Shriners Hospitals for Children of Northern California when relevant.
The second through fifth years of resident training incorporate intense academic concentration on Orthopaedic Surgery. Training takes place at five distinct institutions that help residents gain a balanced understanding of the subtle differences within the health care system. One-half day a week is dedicated to outpatient clinical duties and residents have the opportunity to engage in a variety of private outpatient clinical experiences. Residents take call and dedicate one-half day a week to outpatient clinical duties.
Our Research Director Jenni M. Buckley, PhD., will help you develop a project suited to your interests during rotations in research. We provide ample resources and appropriate faculty supervision to ensure you receive the guidance you might seek during this period of academic inquiry.
As one of Kaiser’s flagship hospitals, the Oakland branch gives you the opportunity to learn Orthopaedic Surgery in the most direct fashion: operating, and more operating. Specialized faculty and large patient volumes provide an excellent setting for you to challenge your academic knowledge while honing your surgical skills. One-half day a week is dedicated to outpatient clinical duties.
