Resident Requirements

PGY-1 Year

ACLS Certification

Prior to starting your first post-graduate year of residency, you are required to obtain your ACLS certification. This is available online www.aclsonline.us.

Step 3 Examination

Residents are required to complete the Step 3 Examination by the end of their intern year.  Your application should be submitted no later than August or September of your first year.  An ideal time to take this exam is in November or December.  Below are links for completing this process.

PGY-2 Year

California State Medical License

Immediately after completing the process of applying for your
Step 3 examination
, you must apply for your California State Medical License.  You may begin the application process prior to taking the Step 3 examination.  It is on a first come first serve basis, so the sooner you start the better. (The FBI background check usually takes the longest)  You should apply no later than July of your PGY-2 year.  This process can take up to six-nine months and you will not be able to start your PGY-3 year without your license.  The renewal for CA licensing is every 2 years from your birth month be sure to use the reduced fee form for residents.

The California State Medical Board requires that the following documents be sent directly from your medical school:

 

Fingerprinting

Below is the link to print out the Live Scan Form that you will need prior to getting your fingerprinting done. Make four copies of the form, send the original copy to the medical board, the finger printing agency keeps 2 copies, and keep the last copy for yourself. 

 

DEA License

Apply for your DEA license after you receive your medical license. The current license fee is $551.00. You will need to renew every 3 years.
