Residency Program Overview
The San Francisco Orthopaedic Residency Program (SFORP) is honored to
be part of St. Mary's Medical Center, a medical facility recognized for
advanced medical practices, such as the nation's first digital cardiac
catheterization laboratory, pioneering spine surgery and comprehensive
rehabilitation. Our program offers three categorical orthopaedic
surgery residency positions each year with a total of fifteen residents
participating in our program annually (3 residents per PGY-1 through
PGY-5).
How do I apply? »
During your residency of five years, you learn all aspects of orthopaedic surgery and musculoskeletal medicine, including:
- Joints
- Trauma
- Spine/foot and ankle
- Sports/plastic surgery
- General orthopaedics

Our hands-on experience is intertwined with our core curriculum, which serves as the foundation for the academic side of our program. We emphasize the exploration of didactic learning through academic preparation and research. This includes a series of lectures and conferences covering topics in:
- Anatomy and surgical cadaver dissection
- Fractures related to basic science, foot and ankle, adult arthroplasty, sports, bio-mechanical, pediatrics, oncology, hand, spine, trauma, and rehab
- Casting and splinting
