Medical Student Clerkship
The San Francisco Orthopaedic Residency Program (SFORP) offers four-week clerkships for students currently attending school for a medical degree.
Responsibilities
- Work with one of four residents at St. Mary’s Medical Hospital at all times. One clerk is designated to Research.
- Make rounds (visiting post-op patients) with your assigned resident, ensuring each patient's treatment plan is properly outlined and executed
- Read up on the hospital's surgical cases and discuss treatment plans with resident
- Attend all didactic lecture sessions and clinical conferences
- Complete written project based on a specified topic, assigned by SFORP's Program Director. The project would be due at the end of your clerkship

Opportunities to Learn
- Learn how to perform a proper history and physical on
pre-op patients - Learn aspects of Sports Medicine, Spinal Surgery and Total Joint services. Each criterion is different.
- Gain opportunities to enter the operating room with the resident and attending physician
- Receive explanations on the approach, the equipment used, positioning of the table, surgical skills and suturing techniques
- Obtain Emergency Room exposure

Additional opportunities include exposure to the private practice of The San Francisco Orthopaedic Surgeons Medical Group, Inc., which consists of the Program Director of SFORP, Dr. William A. McGann, a Total Joints Specialist; Dr. Dimitriy Kondrashov, Associate Director and Spine Specialist; Dr. William Montgomery and Dr. Joseph Haggerty both Sports Medicine Specialists; Dr. James Zucherman and Dr. Ken Hsu, Director and Assistant Director for the Spine Center. This private practice office is semi-attached to St. Mary’s Medical Center.
You will also have access to the Orthopaedic Clinic, located at the Sr. Mary Philippa Clinic Building. Here, you'll see scheduled clinic patients with a resident.
And finally, we always seek to improve our clerkship program. Therefore, as your clerkship ends, we request feedback via an evaluation form describing your experience at SFORP. We strongly encourage feedback with recommendations on how we can make improvements to the clerkship program.
